Spin Mania Review

Spin Mania Review

We had the chance to review a new game, Spin Mania, out in time for Christmas. It’s not your normal board game with dice and counters, believe me we have loads of them in this house.

Spin Mania is more of a hands on game and puts extra pressure on with a timer.

This game comes from Drumond Park which sell all sorts of games online check it out at their website www.drumondpark.com

Here’s the what they say about it

DESCRIPTION:

A 2+ player game to test speed and agility by completing spinning plate time trial challenges in the fastest time. Includes 1 x motorised spin base with timer, 3 x spinning plates, 3 x plate bases, 1 x plate handle, 4 x scoring pegs, and instructions. Requires 2 x ‘C’ batteries (not included). Suitable for children aged 6 years upwards.

ASSEMBLY:

No assembly is required other than putting together the three plate stands by pushing the posts into the three-legged bases. Batteries also need to be inserted into the underside of the Spin Base prior to play – a Phillips screwdriver will be required for this.

To play, each player turns on the spin base (via a switch on the underside) and, ensuring that the timer is set to the start position and the tip is spinning steadily, starts the timer and lowers their first plate onto the tip. Once the plate is spinning on the tip, the player must use their plate handle (or ‘spin spike’) to pick it up and transfer it to one of the positioned plate stands, following which they must then rush back and repeat the process with the second and third plates.

Obviously players take part one at a time, and to make the game more challenging the other players secretly place the plate stands around the playing area (agreed in advance) prior to each turn, for example in a visible but slightly difficult-to-get-to location!

The plates must be spinning at all times during and after transfer – if they are dropped en route or they stop spinning, they must be ‘spun up’ again. Once the third plate is spinning on its stand, the player races back to the spin base to stop the timer. Coloured marker pegs are included for each player to handily record their time (via holes around the side of the timer).

The winner is the player who completes the challenge in the shortest time.

Here’s what we think:

So my boys are 12 and 14yrs old. This game is suitable for 6+ although to be honest it would depend on their motor skills at that age. We gave it a go and thought it would be probably too young for my boys. How wrong could I be.

The element of competition with the timer was brilliant. Also the fact that they could place the plate bases anywhere in the room!

It wasn’t as easy as it looked though and I would suggest everyone has a practice of transferring the plates before the game starts. Our boys are very competitive so it was entertaining in itself waiting to see where they had placed the base plates.

The plates need enough spin to keep going until you can place the last plate but it’s a fine line between enough spin and wasting time.

All in all we found this to be an different style and very entertaining game. This one will definitely be played over Christmas and will be hilarious after a few glasses of wine ( for the adults of course).

Spin Mania retails around £22.99 and is in keeping with most game prices. There is no major set up but remember like most games the batteries are NOT included.

DISCLAIMER: we were sent this game free of charge for review purposes

Trouble with the Curve

That’s the title of a newly released (this weekend) film that I had the chance of going to see.

It stars the legendary Clint Eastwood, Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams, and follows the estranged relationship between a father and daughter and loosely based around the sport of baseball.

Have a look at the down loadable link below:

Trouble with the Curve

This is a character based story and is a slow burner that simmers throughout enticing you to want to know what has made these characters how they are!

I like these sorts of films, you are not detracted from the story by loud, unnecessary stunts and noise. Clint Eastwood plays a fantastic ‘grumpy old man’ and actually you can almost feel his frustration as his general demeanor has changed so much from the ‘Dirty Harry’ suave days. Although he is cranky you want to slap and cuddle him at the same time. Amy Adams is a great counterpart to the dad. Successful but lonely striving for success in other parts of her life in order not to deal with the ‘father’ issue. Justin Timberlake, an acceptable eye candy, was a great fun, forward but like able character.

I’ve got to say the dads ‘old cronies’ club that seem to be at every game to are a fab bunch, showing that your sense of humour does not diminish as you get older.

Like I say, sometimes these stories are my favourites. The father/ daughter relationship keeps you captivated and it was nice that when the truth was out the relationship did not magically fix itself, but still kept you guessing if they would ever see ‘eye to eye’.

This is a heartwarming, enjoyable film great for a lovely quiet Sunday afternoon.

Here are some pics from the movie to get you wondering:

Trouble with the Curve

In cinemas now

Back to earth with a bump!

Yes, the story of my Mum in Meltdown life.

I have spent the last 3 weeks swanning around looking feeling pretending to be a yummy mummy in my brand new Volvo XC60 ( on loan only).

I have enjoyed my bum being warmed by the heated seats, the fantastic CD/DVD/Digital TV, the cruise control, the comfortable leather interior the genius Blindspot indicators and even the reversing camera. I have driven safely across over 400 miles both on longer journeys and lots of urban shorts, with the standard safety that Volvo insists on (as most of the safety features, Blis, side impact, extra airbags etc coming as standard).

Yet as I look out of my window today I see this…….

YES it’s the empty space where it used to sit!! They came yesterday and took it from me………my time with it was up *weeps into my coffee*!!

As you can see I will be back to driving my regular family ‘cab’ car again, with a very cold bum and no fancy extras.

Hey, who was I kidding anyway…………..me- a yummy mummy?…………dream on!

THANK YOU VOLVO FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRY DRIVING IN STYLE AND SAFETY…………………IT’S BEEN FUN!

Volvo XC60 Review Post

Volvo XC60

I was offered the chance to review a Volvo XC60 for several weeks to put it through it’s paces (as an ex driving instructor) as a standard family car and see what I thought about it.

We have a Vauxhall Zafira at the moment mainly for the extra seats for the kids friends and a massive boot for when we go camping as it easily holds all our gear. When the Volvo XC60 was delivered to us and was placed side by side with the Zafira on my small drive, I was actually surprised that it was the same length as the Zafira,  which holds an extra two seats or can be used as an estate sized boot space.

On first look at the Volvo I had expected the boot to be small, and this was simply going on the outline shape of the car itself. There’s no denying that it’s a meaty monster and sturdy as you would expect from Volvo and luckily for us it was pimped to the hilt.

Volvo XC60

The boot space was incredibly deceptive and if you want you can also half the size if it by putting up a divider so your lonely bag of shopping does not roll around as you drive.

One of the hidden advantages is that this bottom panel can be locked. So if the kids have their games consoles on a journey and you want to leave them in the car, you simply hide them under the panel and it locks, Therefore, even if someone broke into the back of the car this bottom panel  would remain locked and hopefully this added security measure will keep those valuables safe.

So yesterday the boys went to school and me and my husband took the Volvo XC60 on a drive out to the coast to give it it’s first major run. I know, you can hand me the ‘Bad Mother of the Year’ award now, but the trip was combined with Christmas shopping, so we could hardly take the boys with us, right?

My husband was eager to drive ,no surprise there, and it meant I could get some pics of the inside and take a proper look at things while I didn’t have to concentrate on actually driving. Granted the photos were taken on my phone and on the move but you can get the gist.

Volvo XC60

The control panel was pretty impressive without being overly technical. It has everything from a sat nav, a digital TV, a DVD and CD player, a phone and a reverse view camera. Not to mention the heated seat controls.

Now I’m only 5f 2  myself I tend to get a restricted view out the rear view mirror on most makes of car, and the Volvo XC60 is no exception. However, they have made an easy, straight forward and frankly common sense answer to this. Simply you can adjust the back seat headrests forward to get a more comprehensive view. Obviously this can only be used if no one is sitting in the back but this one adjustment makes all the difference for me as a driver. I can safely see as much as possible without any obstructions. As an ex driving instructor I can tell you this was huge for me. I am forever moving in my seat to give myself the most information in order to drive safely.

Volvo XC60
The normal view with headrests as usual in the way…..

Volvo XC60
The view with NO headrests

There is actually a button to put the headrests down. Be warned though when this button is pressed the headrests do spring down with urgency, so best not to make the mistake of pressing it while you have passengers in the back.

The car was definitely comfortable on a long run out. Both myself at only 5ft2 and my 6ft husband found the seats comfortable for both our needs .The sat nav worked a treat and when we had the radio on it would automatically lower in volume in order for you to hear the directions/ instructions clearly.  We had a play around with the cruise control which was definitely interesting and took a while to get used to not putting your foot on the accelerator. But we both felt this would be a great asset when doing a long motorway journey and wished we had planned a trip to see my family in Devon as we could have really put this to the test as we would be driving from London. However, even on a shorter journey we felt this was still a great advantage to

One of my favourite safety tricks it had was blind spot indicators. Now a an ex driving instructor I can tell you there is absolutely no better safety check than that glance over your shoulder before overtaking on a motorway. But I do admit that on a long journey that this is probably one of the areas that most people with overlook and just use the mirrors. So having a light indicator near your side mirrors is a simple but brilliant reminder to double check before you attempt to move lanes.

Volvo XC60

Now although we tried our best to fill the boot with the Christmas shopping we bought that day, I’m sorry to say it looked a little pitiful in the spacious monster. I would have loved to have tried filling it with all our camping gear for a trip though. But to be fair my husband is a tetris master at packing so would probably have no problems fitting it all in anyway.

Volvo XC60

We now only have just over one week left with the Volvo XC60, and I will be very sorry to see it taken away. We have just a run of the mill family car at the moment which does the job. However, its only when you actually test drive others in this class do you see and feel the real difference. So in the meantime I will just have to make every excuse possible to get back in this beauty and drive it as much as possible before it goes. To say I’m going to miss the heated seats is the biggest understatement ever.

Just Me Being Mrs B

OMG How the other half live………Volvo XC60 review

No I haven’t won the Lottery ( I’m still waiting on that) however, I am getting the chance to drive something you may buy if you did win the Lottery!

Ok I will explain. I was recently offered the chance to ‘Review’ a brand new car for 3 weeks!!! YES a brand new car, from the lovely Volvo people, with a full tank of petrol( or actually diesel in this case) and both myself and my OH fully insured to drive it.

Well lets face I would have been a complete mug to turn this opportunity down- wouldn’t I?

So this car was delivered to my door yesterday evening and the driver took me through a quick brief of all the gadgets, buttons and controls.

To say this car has been pimped is an understatement!!

The car itself is a Volvo XC60……………I realise that will probably mean nothing to most of you so I thought I would show you instead:

I want you to overlook the rather BRIGHT blue colour!

This was a quick snap taken when I went out in it today……………yes I have already put it to use! This picture does not really do it justice so I will be posting better ones over the next few weeks, as I will be posting about how ‘we’ as a family find the car for town journeys, shopping and days out, how family friendly it is, and how we all get on with the gadgets…………..and believe me there are many!!!

Sat Nav

CD and DVD player

Digital TV ( I know……….AMAZING!)

Cruise control

Bluetooth technology to sync my phone ready for hands free!

Sun Roof

Tinted back windows

Heated Seats people!!! HEATED SEATS

That’s before I start on the safety elements on the car- all of which I will go into in later posts. Today on my 1st run out I happened to notice a little orange light on the inside of the door opposite the wing mirror???? Now I kept seeing this light coming on and off and couldn’t work out why!! Then the penny dropped…………………..its a warning light indicating that someone is overtaking and in my blind spot!!! GENIUS

Now as an ex driving instructor some of the available gadgets do go against the grain at first sight- the reversing camera for one! I’m a true believer that if you going to drive a car then learn to do it properly without relying on anything to do it for you!! HOWEVER, I’ve got to say I found myself looking anyway as it comes on automatically……….so I may get converted yet.

So, to say I am a happy chappy is an understatement.

Notice the BIG smile………I didn’t actually realise I had colour co-ordinated myself to the car!!!! DUH

For the next 3 weeks I will be looking as though I’m living like the other (rich) half do!! Blimey, who knows I could make a ‘Yummy Mummy’ yet……………………………………………………..OK don’t hold your breath on that one.

PetPlan Pet Toy Test – Review

As regulars will know I have 2 cats- one 2 yr old and a 16wk old kitten. So I jumped at the chance recently to review some of the available ‘cat scratcher’ toys that are on the market thanks to PetPlan, the Uk’s leading pet insurer, who asked me to take part in a Pet Toy Test in order for them to put the best toy up for a competition prize on their PetPlan Uk Facebook page.

The toys were quickly delivered and this is what I received:

As you can see the one in the middle is the traditional style cat scratch post, while the ones on either side are new to me- made of cardboard and look to be recyclable, and come complete with a bag of catnip to use with it. The idea for the review was to test the toys and discover which one I liked as a pet owner and also which one the cats preferred!!

As an owner I will be honest and say that I like to pay for things that will last, so the traditional style immediately got my vote!

However after having the toys in place for a few days it was easy to see which of the posts both my cats preferred:

My 2 yr old checking it out immediately!

Just checking it works LOL!!

The kitten getting his turn!

So I have to admit that I have fully changed my mind. Lets face it if you have kids or pets and you want a happy time then you tend to go with the things that they like! I haven’t even had to use the extra bag of catnip to keep them interested.

My only concern is that the cardboard ones obviously are not going to last forever or even as long as the traditional style. The ones I have been sent have already taken a battering.

But on the plus side they are very portable, recyclable, small so do not become an obstruction and to be honest in my local pet store they are available for around £7 so really don’t break the bank!

Lets face it how much would you pay for your cats not to scratch up your curtains/ furniture or sofas?

****** So pop over to the Petplan UK Facebook page for your chance to win one and see how your cats love it!******

DISCLAIMER: all views are my own and I did not receive payment for this review

Note: Petplan has provided me with these toys as part of their Pet Toy Test review programme. Visit the Petplan UK Facebook page for more information and a chance to win the winning toy!

Journey 2 -The Mysterious Island

I was sent a copy of the newly released Journey 2 The Mysterious Island to review over the half term, however earlier in the year my boys and I attended the screening for this film. Having no real expectations for this sequel to Journey to the Centre of the Earth, we were pleasantly surprised to come away having enjoyed it!!

So premise of the story if you don’t know:

Sean gets crypted messages from a ‘mysterious island’, Hank ( stepdad) helps him uncover the code and accompanies him find the island. Gabato and his daughter help them get there by using their helicopter. Long story short…….they get there by default, find Sean’s long lost grandfather (Caine) and have to find a way off the island as it’s sinking!! Cue the Nautilus/ Atlantis slant.

Anyway, all in all a great film to entertain the kids over the coming half term. Action, adventure and a splash of comedy makes for a kids film that even the parents may admit to enjoying for what it is. Michael Caine is great as the long lost grandfather and the initial strained relationship between him and Hank will have you smirking. Look out for the taut pecs and berries routine………don’t say you weren’t warned!

The film has been rated as a PG and has a running time of 94mins

Prices will vary depending on both the retailer and package ( dvd/ blueray/ or triple play)

DISCLOSURE- I was sent the DVD free of charge for review purposes only, however, all views expressed are my own.

Perfect Balance Bedding Range Review

When I posted about the symptoms of my M.E here I was contacted by The Fine Bedding Co who suggested that I take a look at their website and in particular the Perfect Balance range that they sell as it could help me get a more restful sleep.

I did take a look and I found that although the items seemed to fit what I was looking for they were very much out of my price range with not working at the moment!

However, they kindly offered me a Perfect Balance duvet and 2 pillows to try out and review. RESULT I thought and was sadly overexcited when the parcel turned up. Delivery was very prompt arriving the next day and the items were packaged well in a huge box.We missed the first delivery and they came back the following day.

Could this mean a perfect night’s sleep?

SO here is what they say :

Innovative Lysoft® technology absorbs and disperses excess humidity, helping to regulate your body to its optimal temperature to ensure a better sleep experience. The soft down-like microfibre filling provides cushioning softness and comfort. It provides exceptional breathability – perfect for those who get too warm or cold during the night.

  • Regulates the body to its optimum temperature throughout the night
  • Wicks moisture away from the body and disperses for a more refreshing night’s sleep
  • Breathable, super soft Lysoft® cotton cover
  • Non-allergenic
  • Superbly light

Duvets in this range start at £60 for a 4.5 tog single and £90 for a standard double 10.5 tog!

Innovative Lysoft® technology disperses excess humidity and is exceptionally breathable, helping to regulate your body to its optimal temperature to ensure a better sleep experience. The soft down-like microfibre filling provides cushioning softness and comfort. Non-allergenic, this pillow provides medium support.

  • Filled with our innovative Lysoft® microfibre blend
  • Gently cradles the head
  • Wicks moisture away from the body and disperses for a more refreshing night’s sleep
  • Breathable, super soft Lysoft® cotton cover
  • Non-allergenic
  • A superbly light and fluffy pillow offering medium to soft support

Pillows in this range are £30

Now I don’t know what you would regard as pricey but this fell into the category for me unfortunately. I’m always very doubtful of whether my money will be well spent or not!

So we gave it a shot and changed all the bedding. Now at first glance the duvet appeared a little thin to me ( normally they are thick and fluffy and need stuffing into the cover) although it had a lovely ‘cool’ to the touch feel about it. The pillows had the same feel but were beautifully soft and did need a bit of stuffing into the pillowcase!!

Both my husband and I had a feeling that the duvet would not be warm enough and so kept our own one close to hand that night. However, we were very much mistaken. The duvet was plenty warm enough but even more surprisingly it did what it said on the packaging!!

With M.E I have no temperature control so about 95% of the time I am freezing but during the night for the other 5% I burn up. This does not bode well for a good night’s sleep. The new Perfect Balance duvet actually seemed to stop me from overheating. I was completely taken by surprise. So I decided that I should wait a week or so before posting a review in case it was a one off. But still I have been more comfortable during the night (temperature wise) although I will always have problems sleeping, at least now burning up is not one of them.

The pillow was perfect for me. I love a huge bouncy soft pillow and these were just that. They too claimed to disperse the body moisture away. Now I have thick, long hair and those of you with long hair can appreciate that we can get a little ‘heated’ at night, more often than not I tie my hair up to stop me getting too hot. But again VERY SURPRISINGLY the pillow did exactly what it said on the packaging. As with the duvet it also had a ‘cool’ to the touch feel which you get a sense of through the pillowcase.

My husband however, did not feel the same about the pillows. He is more comfortable with a firm pillow and so he didn’t find it comfortable and has since gone back to his regular pillow. Although he did mention that he didn’t have to keep turning the pillow for the ‘cool’ side (something he always does with his own!).That means I have a spare new one left for me!!! But he has been really impressed with the duvet and he too agreed that it seemed to stop him from getting uncomfortably hot.

So the question would seem to be

How much would you pay for a more comfortable and restful nights sleep??

Those of you with young children are sleep deprived beyond belief, so the time spent in bed is crucial. Those of you who suffer with M.E like me or another illness or condition that means you can overheat, again time in bed sleeping comfortably is crucial.

So please take a look at their website here finebedding.co.uk

DISCLOSURE

I have not received any payment for this review however, I was sent a double duvet and 2 pillows for review purposes only. THE VIEWS STATED ABOVE ARE COMPLETELY MY OWN.

Vimto Hot Mulled Berry Punch – a review

I was sent a bottle of this before Christmas in order to test out a non alcoholic alternative to mulled wine.

I like normal Vimto and I’m rather partial to a cup of mulled wine to get in the Christmas spirit. So I thought this would be right up my street!

“…Vimto’s much-loved original flavor has been blended with an enticing concoction of aromatic cloves, warming cinnamon and sweet nutmeg to pack a seasonal punch. Just add hot water for a warming non-alcoholic drink or use as a mixer to create a hot winter cocktail…”

Ok I know I’m a bit late for the Christmas rush but life truly got in the way over December and although I worked my way through half the bottle before Christmas I haven’t gotten around to telling you all about it until now……………….sorry.

Now when I first made this drink up I was a little worried as I found the smell to be a little overpowering. However, as a lover of flavoured teas I had a feeling the smell would be stronger than the taste……..and I was right!

At first taste I was a little disappointed as I thought it was just a cup of hot blackcurrant. Then the taste of the mulled spices kicked in and I was hooked. It did really have the taste of mulled wine without the worry of whether you could actually drive home!

The limited edition was available over Christmas in Tesco’s for £1.89 a bottle.

If we are lucky they may have some still left! I have still some of my bottle and to be honest it is a lovely alternative to tea and coffee as a winter warmer drink. So I will enjoy what I have left…………..until the next time.

Light Strike Review

Light Strike Review

When I was asked if my boys would like to review the new Light Strike range it was a total no brainer! Boys and their toys and all that.

Light Strike

Light Strike is a super-cool new interactive battle game from WowWee, makers of bestselling toys, Paper Jamz and Robosapien

Light Strike is the first interactive gaming system that brings video games into the real world, live and in colour. Fully customisable with built-in weapon choices and slots to attach accessories, players can make tactical decisions to add new features and functions on the go. Interactive light and sound effects put you in the middle of combat, creating exciting ever-changing battle scenarios!

We were sent 2 of the Light Strike Assault Strikers, 4 of the add-ons (enemy scanner, machine gun bi pod, refractor launch and scope) and a Light Strike ITS to try out.

They delved in straight away and unpacked everything. Then we sorted the batteries and in true boy fashion ( I don’t need the instructions……they were off). But then they decided to check out the instructions that I had thankfully kept hold of.

Anyway, they went full into action mode. Testing the noise, the aim, the strategy and ultimately who can win! They are boys after all, the alfa male gene kicked in.

So here’s the technical bit:
Light Strike brings video-game action into the real world—live and in color. Assault Strikers and Strikers are customizable with built-in weapon features and add-on attachments that give players a tactical advantage. Play one-on-one tournaments or create up to 4 teams of unlimited players for free-for-all or Capture the Flag battles. Action at the speed of light™
For more details check out the website below

http://www.lightstrike.com/

They range from £9.99 up to around £40 with the guns obviously costing the most.
The extras are just that- extras. But they certainly enhance the game between the players.
They have brilliant sound affects which the boys loved, especially the fingerprint analysis. But even better for us parents wanting a bit of quiet time they have the option of plugging in your headphones! GENIUS
My boys in truth don’t play very well together, but because of the nature of these toys they were perfect for my two. Although we were lucky enough to be sent a lot of the Light Strike range you wouldn’t necessarily need all of them to start with. Therefore, it would be something you could add to along the way, for birthdays etc.
They are available from their website and other good toy retailers
