The answer for us is YES. We did in fact get a rescue kitten in January and she is a complete sweetheart, friendly, loves cuddling and continually sits on my lap or lays on me in bed!
Last week I had the opportunity to visit Battersea dog and Cats Home for a chat and a tour of their cattery. My OH was supposed to come with me but had to work last minute instead but he left me with a parting message………… DO NOT BRING ANYTHING HOME!! He knows me far too well.
So the event started off with a chat from a few peeps from Bob Martin who are now in partnership with Battersea Dog and Cats home and provide their cattery with all their cat litter……….. tons of it as you can imagine.
Then we had a chat with a vet who was great answering all our questions and giving us hints on what to look for in cats to help spot illness or just generally check they are in good health. Then came the part we were all waiting for- a tour around the cattery. Now my little rescue cat was kept in a purpose built shed with her whole litter in a small cage. Now I know rescuers have to do the best they can but I was literally blown away with the accommodation the cats were kept in. They were all glass so they could see all around, they each had litter trays, comfy beds and blankets to lay on, their food and LOTS of stimulating toys in each of the kennels. At one point there was 2 adults in one of the kennels with the cats and there was still plenty of room. There was also a sheet on each door giving all the essential details of each cat, how old they were, if they preferred a home with or without children or other pets.
Things you may not know about Battersea Dog and Cats Home:
* Since it was founded in 1860 it has rescued, reunited and rehomed 3.1 million dogs and cats
* They have nearly 1000 volunteers providing vital roles from admin to dog and cat socialising.
* The 10 downing Street cat, Larry is from Battersea
* Battersea is a charity and gets no government funding so relies on donations and it currently costs £12.5 million a year to care for all the cats and dogs
* On average they have 400 dogs and 250 cats at any one time
I didn’t go around the dog kennels which I know my OH would have loved and he is desperate for a dog although we have agreed to wait until he has retired from his job and therefore has more time, but I have a feeling it’s definitely going to be a rescue dog. It’s hard to go into these places and not want to take an animal home!
But if you are looking for a cheap activity to do with the kids Battersea Dogs and Cats home are running a ‘Kitten Shower’ event on THURSDAY 24th JULY 1030 am -1PM and 2PM- 4.30PM where you can meet the residents, name some new arrivals and enjoy arts, crafts and games. Entry is £3 children and £5 adults which includes a donation to the home, so a great activity and you have helped the home a little too!
